Nigeria is at the forefront of efforts to address Noma disease globally. This was evidenced in the role played to ensure it is added to the list of NTDs by World Health Organization, and the annual NomaConference to sustain the conversations.
It was a two-day event that also featured a scientific session where researchers shared from the increasing body of knowledge they have uncovered. It included areas such as….
• Aetiology and clinical features
• Mental health impact
• Advocacy and public health perspective
• Surgical outcomes
It has been documented that 58 countries have eliminated at least one NTD. Since the first Noma conference in, advocacy and the number of researches done have increased.
This can potentially make Nigeria the first country to eliminate Noma. Till then, more effort need to be put in place to BeatNTDs and achieve ZeroNoma
