Today, on World Sickle Cell Day, we recognize the resilience of sickle cell warriors and the unique health challenges they face.

Sometimes ago, we identified a Noma case complicated by underlying sickle cell anaemia. While bone involvement and osteonecrosis are documented events in patients with Noma, the vaso-occlusive nature of sickle cell disease can further compromise blood supply to affected tissues.

In this case, the mandible was severely affected. Beyond periosteal stripping and bone necrosis, the affected segment became friable and progressively chipped away, creating significant challenges during reconstruction.

This experience, like many others, highlights the need to close the survival gap. This calls for greater awareness, timely care, and stronger support systems for people living with sickle cell disease.
